Glaciers

Days: 53 – 54

Mile: 6178

We left Grizzly Lake and headed for Anchorage. We didn’t see any grizzly bears at Grizzly Lake but we did learn a lesson; check out the campground roads before you park for the night. I think we may have been the largest rig to have stayed here. Getting out was a tight squeeze.

The road to Anchorage follows the Matanuska River with the glaciated area of the Chugach Mountains in the distance. Breathtaking!!!!

Once again, there are no words for the beauty of this area. Furthermore, I don’t think photos can even begin to capture magnitude. I hope the roads in some of these photos provide scale. It was a cool, rainy day so we had some cloud cover but it was still beautiful.

We were warned about road construction in Alaska. They have a very short window of time to do repair work, generally May – August. The roads develop what some call “frost heaves”, others call “frosties.” The road buckles when the ground underneath begins to thaw. In addition to ruts and heaves, road crews are constantly dealing with rock slides, erosion along the river side of the road and bridge repairs. Fortunately for us we have not encountered any long delays due to road construction. Even when we do, the scenery makes the inconvenience bearable.

There are indeed “no words” that could sufficiently describe the beauty you are witnessing. While extremely jealous, I am so grateful the two of you are doing this. We are enjoying your posts so much. Love , Cin
