We made it to Dawson Creek, Mile 0 of the Alaskan-Canadian Highway. The Alaskan – Canadian Highway runs from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Fairbanks, Alaska. Construction began on the highway in March of 1942 and the highway was officially opened on November 20, 1942. A truly amazing feat to build a 1,382 mile road in less than 9 months.
We laughed to think we came 4618 miles to arrive at mile 0. So far, the roads have been good. No frost heave, no gravel and no construction. There have been some places where there is no shoulder, which is a bit unnerving. Although the traffic has been light, when a semi comes towards you on these narrow roads, you sure wish you had a shoulder.
The best part about Dawson Creek was, we met up with my sister and her husband. We camped at the same place for two nights, walked the small town of Dawson Creek in the rain and visited the Dawson Creek Visitor Center and Museum. We also got protection: Bear Spray!
We may have already driven over 4,500 miles but we are very excited to be at mile 0 of the famous Alaska – Canadian (Alcan) Highway. On Day 46, we will begin a new leg of our journey.
