OK Oklahoma, OKAY!!

We spent two nights in OK. As we drove from our first night stay in Checota, OK on Lake Eufaula, to our second night stay, in Sayer, OK, Gary must have asked me a dozen times, “What is Oklahoma known for, besides the Oklahoma City bombing?” Neither of us could think of anything else, except maybe tornados.  Seems that we are not the only ones.  According to Siri, Oklahoma is one of the most underrated states in the USA. “A true gem worth exploring.”

Okay, turns out Oklahoma has lots of cool “claims to fame.”  The bread twist tie was invented in Oklahoma, the first Girl Scout Cookie was sold in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1917 and the nation’s first parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City in 1935.  Oh, I forgot the shopping cart was invented in Ardmore, OK in 1936.

Oklahoma is also the home of the Route 66 Meat Processing and Market. Our second Harvest Host stop just off of Highway 40 in Sayer, OK.  Not much to talk about here. The name tells it all. We are parked in a gravel parking lot, no shade, no electricity and it’s hot. We do have a nice fresh rib eye steak in the fridge to cook on the grill tonight.

What we have noticed about Oklahoma; it’s flat, there are lots of casinos, the gas is cheap, but we don’t want to live here. Now if I can get Gary to stop singing songs from the musical Oklahoma I will be happy.

Funny, shortly after reading this, we encountered a van with Oklahoma plates, and stopped to talk with the passengers. The family was vacationing in Indy and confirmed all facts in your blog post and added one. Did you know that Frank Lloyd Wright designed a tower for Bartlesville? Their comment was that all the angles are off a smidge.

The Price Tower is a nineteen-story, 221-foot-high tower at 510 South Dewey Avenue in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. It was built in 1956 to a design by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is the only realized skyscraper by Wright, and is one of only two vertically oriented Wright structures extant. The Price Tower was commissioned by Harold C. Price of the H. C. Price Company, a local oil pipeline and chemical firm. It opened to the public in February 1956.

You didn’t mention there are a lot of cows you can wave at as you zip along the highway.
